      <image:title>Blog 1 - Why do my teeth hurt when I sleep!</image:title>
<image:caption>Night time bruxism, or grinding, occurs in up to 31% of adults. It is not solely a night time issue as some people unconsciously clench or grind their teeth throughout the day. What causes someone to grind? Grinding is typically triggered by stress, anxiety, or even deep concentration about something. There is also the possibility of malalignment, which is teeth not in the right place, and issues with the chemicals that help fire your muscles. Potentially it can also be a sign of having sleep apnea. Bruxism can also occur during the daytime! What are the signs that someone is grinding their teeth? Soreness in your teeth, sensitivities, muscle pain that is often confused as tooth pain, teeth that seem to be breaking at inopportune times with no decay present. Your dentist might mention about your teeth having wear facets, or getting shorter over time. Night time bruxism can be helped by making bite guards, or your dentist might use the word bite splint. These are made to help position your joint in a comfortable position and make your back teeth not touch when you grind. What’s the point of that? When your back teeth don’t touch, your jaw closing muscles deactivate by 70%. This is the main reason why it helps with teeth/muscles having discomfort. There are store bought boil and bite night guards that are soft that many people try and use. The problem with these is that the softness allows you to “pump” your muscles all night long on them and can actually cause more muscle discomfort. Bruxism is an issue that can be managed as long as the correct diagnoses can be made.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog 1 - “My tooth hurts!”</image:title>
<image:caption>Ouch, my tooth hurts! Few things are worse than when you have a nagging tooth pain. Trying to find relief is tough but are all tooth pains the same? No, Let’s discuss it! Imagine you are just sitting around watching TV, just relaxing and you start to feel this achy discomfort that comes out of nowhere. The discomfort feels like a “throbbing pain” that may come and go in waves. You decide that you may want a warm drink and that causes the tooth more discomfort. These are all signs that the nerve inside the tooth are going bad. The “achy, throbbing” discomfort you feel is the nerve abscessing, or dying, causing an infection. What does that mean? The tooth will need a root canal to remove the nerve. Everyone has horror stories of how awful root canals are but they are pretty boring with no discomfort during the procedure and minimal discomfort after. Next type is usually after you have some dental work done and after an amount of time, you start to notice discomfort and your teeth do not fit quite right. The tooth can become sensitive to cold and hot liquids. Typically all that needs to be done is the filling or crown needs to be adjusted. It may take a couple days for the tooth to completely settle back down. Along the same lines, you may be eating some food, typically something hard, and you get an electrical jolt from your tooth with some discomfort that could linger after. This is a sign that the tooth is trying to split. If the tooth is splitting it can go two ways: 1) Only the part above the gums is breaking off. The treatment is to crown the tooth to help make it structurally sound. 2) The crack has progressed down the root of the tooth. Once it has progressed far enough down, the tooth is no longer viable and will need to be removed. These are just a few examples of the main things we see. There are varying degrees of these three scenarios and many more nuisance reasons why a tooth can have discomfort. I will wrap this up by saying that getting dental work done is usually much easier if the tooth is treated before it starts hurting. Getting regular check ups allows us to intervene when issues are small.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog 1 - “I want my teeth whiter!</image:title>
<image:caption>That’s a phrase that is commonly heard by dentists. Is it always the patients fault? No necessarily! Let’s break down how you get decay in your teeth. Teeth are made up of a very hard material called Hydroxyapatite, which is the hardest material in the body. Coincidentally it lives in one of the harshest environments of the body. The process of tooth decay isn’t a linear process, it’s actually very dynamic. When you eat something, mainly sugar or carbs, bacteria feeds on it and secretes acids, which lowers your pH, and that causes the hydroxyapatite to start to break down. When you stop eating, your saliva, which has buffering minerals, starts to raise the pH again to make it more neutral or basic, which causes it to remineralize. As long as the breakdown only happens on the outside of the tooth, which is called enamel, you can remineralize the tooth. Over time if your mouth stays in a more acidic environment the hydroxyapatite breaks down enough to where you get into the inner part of the tooth, called dentin, that’s when dentistry will need to be done. Why does it seem like some people have it happen to them more often? Genetics can actually play a role. Some people have less buffering capacity in their saliva and have more/different forms of bacteria. The other is based on diet and homecare. Having a diet full of complex carbs and drinking lots of sugary drinks makes an environment for decay. Homecare is not only how often you brush/floss but how effective that you do it. Using an electric toothbrush is much more effective for cleaning teeth. The amount of water you drink vastly changes the buffering ability of your saliva. It’s good practice to swish with water every time you finish eating something sugary or high in carbs. If decay is a problem for you, try to make an effort to eat less sugars, choose water over sugary drinks, focus on good home health care. Doing those things will help you stay away from expensive dentistry!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog 1 - “Do you take our insurance?”</image:title>
<image:caption>We as a society are engrained from the medical world that you HAVE to have insurance to see the doctor. Is that also true for dentistry? Does dental insurance work the same as medical insurance? Those answers might surprise you. Medical and dental insurances work quite differently in how you are able to actually use them. Medical insurances have a deductible and once you pass that deductible the insurance company picks up the tab. Dental insurances also have a “deductible” BUT when you reach that deductible, you pay for EVERYTHING after that amount. Which is a stark difference. Dental insurance deductibles haven’t changed much since the 1970s even though the price of dental work has gone up tremendously! Let’s talk a little bit about the different types of dental insurances. The main two that you will encounter are PPO and HMO (or DHMO) plans. HMO plans assign you a dentist and you may only receive services from that dentist. PPO plans allow you to see any dentist that you would like. Under the PPO umbrella, there are “‘in-network” and “out-of-network” dentists. Can you only see a dentist that your insurance is “in-network” with? NO! With a PPO plan, you are able to see any dentist. Does a dentist that is “out-of-network” cost more? Not always! Surprisingly, some insurance companies actually pay MORE towards services from an “out-of-network” dentist. Bottom line is that you do NOT NEED to have insurance to see a dentist. Having an understanding about which type of dental insurance you have is helpful when choosing your dentist. If you would like to have a choice, make sure it's a PPO plan. Is it better to see an “in-network” or an “out-of-network” dentist? That’s a choice you get to make! Rather than having your deciding factor on if a dentist takes your insurance or not, I feel that decision should be made on how well the dentist listens, how comfortable they make you, the type of technology they have, and how personable they are!</image:caption>
