CERAMIC CROWNS
Same-Day Ceramic Crowns in Huntsville, TX — Done in One Visit, No Temporary Crown Needed
If you have ever needed a dental crown, you know the old way was not exactly convenient. Two appointments weeks apart. A temporary crown that never quite fit right. Messy impressions. Waiting on a lab. Taking time off work twice.
At Huntsville Dentistry & Implants we do it differently. Using CEREC same-day crown technology, Dr. Fritsch and Dr. McQuay design, mill, and place your permanent ceramic crown in a single appointment — right here in Huntsville. You come in with a damaged tooth and leave the same day with a permanent, custom-fitted crown. No temporary. No second visit. No waiting.
What Is a CEREC Same-Day Crown?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. In plain terms it means we use advanced 3D digital scanning and in-office milling technology to create your crown while you wait — typically in about two hours from start to finish.
The crown itself is made from 100% high-quality dental porcelain — the same material used in traditional lab-made crowns — with no metal, no dark margins, and a completely natural appearance that blends seamlessly with your surrounding teeth. It is custom designed to match the exact shape, size, and shade of your natural tooth.
When Do You Need a Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers a damaged tooth to restore its strength, shape, and appearance. You may need a crown if you have:
A tooth with a large cavity too big for a filling to adequately restore
A cracked or fractured tooth that needs protection
A tooth that has had a root canal and needs to be covered and strengthened
A broken tooth that needs to be rebuilt
A severely worn down tooth from grinding
An older crown that needs to be replaced
If Dr. Fritsch or Dr. McQuay recommends a crown, it is because the tooth needs structural protection that a filling alone cannot provide. A crown done at the right time prevents the need for more extensive treatment — or tooth loss — down the road.
What Is the Same-Day Crown Process Like?
Many patients are surprised by how smooth and comfortable the process is. Here is what to expect from start to finish:
Digital scan — Instead of the traditional goopy impression material that many patients find uncomfortable, we use a precise 3D digital scanner to capture an exact image of your tooth and the surrounding bite. This takes just a few minutes and is completely comfortable.
Custom design — Dr. Fritsch or Dr. McQuay uses specialized software to design your crown digitally — custom shaped and sized to fit your specific tooth perfectly. You can even see the design on screen before it is milled.
In-office milling — Your crown is milled from a single block of high-quality dental porcelain right here in our office using our CEREC milling machine. This typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes while you relax in the chair.
Fitting and placement — Once milled, your crown is checked for fit, adjusted as needed, and permanently cemented onto your tooth. Dr. Fritsch or Dr. McQuay makes final bite adjustments to ensure everything feels completely natural.
From the time you sit down to the time you walk out with your permanent crown, most patients are done in about two hours.
Same-Day Crowns vs. Traditional Crowns — What Is the Difference?
You might be wondering whether a same-day crown is as good as a traditional lab-made crown. The honest answer is yes — and in several ways it is actually better for the patient experience.
Traditional crowns require two separate appointments spaced two to three weeks apart. At the first appointment your tooth is prepared and an impression is taken, then a temporary crown is placed while the lab fabricates your permanent one. Temporary crowns can come off, feel uncomfortable, and require you to be careful about what you eat for weeks. At the second appointment the temporary is removed and the permanent crown is cemented.
With CEREC same-day crowns there is no temporary crown, no second appointment, no waiting, and no lab involved. The porcelain material is high quality, durable, and completely metal-free. For most patients the convenience alone makes same-day crowns the clear preference.
Are Same-Day Crowns Right for Everyone?
Same-day CEREC crowns are appropriate for the vast majority of crown cases. Dr. Fritsch and Dr. McQuay will let you know during your appointment whether a same-day crown is the right choice for your specific tooth. In rare cases involving very complex restorations a traditional lab crown may be recommended — but for most patients the same-day option is an excellent fit.
Frequently Asked Questions About Same-Day Crowns
How long do same-day crowns last? With proper care CEREC ceramic crowns are designed to last 10 to 15 years and often longer — comparable to traditional lab-made crowns. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits keep your crown in great shape long-term.
Does getting a crown hurt? The tooth preparation is done under local anesthesia so you stay comfortable throughout. Some mild sensitivity is normal for a day or two after placement and resolves quickly. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable the whole process is.
Will my crown look natural? Yes. The porcelain is carefully matched to the shade of your surrounding teeth and shaped to blend in naturally. Most people cannot tell the difference between a crown and a natural tooth.
Does insurance cover same-day crowns? Most dental insurance plans cover crowns the same way regardless of whether they are same-day or traditional — typically at 50% after your deductible. We will help you understand your coverage before treatment so there are no surprises. We also offer flexible financing for any out-of-pocket costs.
Can I eat normally after my crown is placed? Yes — because you are leaving with a permanent crown rather than a temporary one, you can eat normally right away. We recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours while the cement fully sets.
